Six steps to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals

If you want to support the lives of present and future generations and to protect Earth from the degradation then do nothing but, just follow the 17 Global Goals of SDGs.


In the year 2020, we stand 5 years into adopting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - the 17 global goals that ensure a more sustainable lifestyle by 2030 and at the core of which are built to protect planet Earth from degradation, to support lives of present and future generations.

 

India, in these years, has adopted several measures to attain the SDGs. As per the indications in the SDG India Index, the country has developed a powerful model that aims at the adoption, execution, and thorough, regular monitoring of initiatives at district as well as state levels. Programs such as Sashakt Bharat - Sabal Bharat (Empowered and Resilient India), Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Programme - Swasth Bharat (Clean and Healthy India), Samagra Bharat - Saksham Bharat (Inclusive and Entrepreneurial India), Satat Bharat – Sanatan Bharat (Sustainable India) and Sampanna Bharat- Samridh Bharat (Prosperous and Vibrant India) have been some of the most promising ones attached to the vision.

However, 2020 marks the beginning of a decade that needs the utmost attention. It embarks our efforts on achieving the goals in the span of the ongoing 10 years. So what are the essential steps required to be on track?



We believe the below listed 6 steps will help developing countries like India fasten their efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals -

 

1. Realize the urgency and accelerate the momentum - With harsh realities of today, such as the pandemic and climate change, it is high time we realize the urgency in implementing essential policies and programs. Having said that, the government can only seize the political momentum, it is a process that equally needs participatory implementation by you and us.

 

2. Communicate the SDGs at national, subnational, and local levels - The agenda under SDGs is “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” We must create opportunities for real citizen dialogues and involvement. It is only when people are actually aware, can they participate in the implementation of the SDGs to the best of their abilities and knowledge.

 

3. Ensure broad participation - Awareness creation must certainly be followed by clear direction for participating. Persuading people into participating without establishing proper channels that lead to their active contribution will only prove to be a waste of time, money, and energy.

 

4. Setting Benchmarks - In order to keep a track of timely progress, the authorities must set benchmarks that enable regular monitoring and reviews. This has to be done across various verticals and levels - right from the government to society; national, subnational, local, community levels. Every action must be accountable with a vision that drives purposeful progress.

 

5. Unlocking the potential of Domestic Resources - India as a country is blessed with an abundance of natural resources. The introduction of programs that encourage usage of local resources will not only make the country sustainable but will also generate employment opportunities; thus achieving SDG 9 - Decent Employment & Economic growth and 11 - Sustainable Cities & Communities. Maximum gain from local resources and revival of the damaged ones will help India step up. For instance, The Namami Gange Mission was launched as a priority programme with a budget outlay of Rs.20, 000 crores for the period 2015-2020. This project focused on ecosystem conservation and the revival of river Ganga.

 

6. Prioritizing National Issues that align with SDGs - The 17 SDGs are vastly spread in nature. Countries can priorities goals that need immediate attention as per the social and economic conditions of their respective nation. For instance - Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Programme is an effort directed towards solving India’s major concern of availing water and sanitation for all; as well as a lucrative step towards achieving United Nations’ SDG 6.
